[TN-Bird] A few yardbirds s. of Kingston (Roane Co.)

Very vocal birds these days, in my woods and adjoining fields, are both a
Summer and a Scarlet tanager, Hairy woodpeckers, Red-bellied woodpeckers,
Blue-gray gnatcatchers, a Wood thrush, Wild turkeys [the clucking of which, I
learn, is called "drintling"], and Chuck-will's-widows, along with the usual
retinue of Carolina chickadees, titmice, bluebirds, crows, Carolina wrens, and
N. mockingbirds --- and then there's my crazed, ?still-unmated? N. cardinal who
has insisted, since late Feb, on methodically bashing his brains out on every
window of the house beginning at first light each morning. Seems the more
groggy, amazed cat and human faces in the window, the more frequently he hits.
At night, I've been hearing the local Barn owl, a pair of Great horned owls,
and a Barred owl. Had E. Screech owls quite close by most of the winter but
don't hear them now.
Missing are Blue jays (I don't mind) and vireos (heard and gone), as well as my
usual Red-tailed and Coopers hawks, and Turkey vultures. Still waiting for my
first Common yellowthroat and Chat, and Chimney swifts.
I went night-kayaking by Kingston Fossil Plant last week and watched 5-7 small
herons fishing, presumably Black-crowned night herons, but I couldn't identify
the silhouettes against the overpowering lighting of the steam plant.
I never tire of hearing Wood thrushes up in my woods, and rejoice that they
still find my woods suitable even after my bordering neighbor bulldozed down 20
acres of trees.
Happy spring-going-on-summer birds, everyone.
