A splendid day to be on the water : sunny, clear and barely warm. Douglas Lake
has risen a couple feet this past week, and dense vegetation on the exposed
bottoms limits visibility from the shore. We explored habitat around the
embayment by canoe for about 5 hours. The numbers cited are conservative; it's
hard to tell if we're encountering the same birds in different locations.
There seemed to be several ospreys in view wherever we went.
Most notable:
Pied-billed grebe
Double-crested cormorant (75)
Great egret (10)
Great blue heron (20)
Little blue heron (1 adult)
Wood duck (25)
Blue-winged teal (30)
Bald eagle (1 immature)
Red-tailed hawk
Osprey (8)
Black vulture (75)
American coot (6)
Pectoral sandpiper
Solitary sandpiper (6)
Greater yellowlegs (3)
Lesser Yellowlegs (45)
Ring-billed gull (25)
Caspian tern
Warbling vireo (heard, but not seen)
Yellow-breasted chat
Black-throated green warbler (10)
Palm warbler (2)
Prothonotary warbler (10)
Common yellowthroat
Indigo bunting (2)

Go canoe birding with us on International Migratory Bird Day
