Mark Greene had only 3 teams of 2 each to cover Lake County for the count on 
Saturday. The 6 of us scratched out a respectable 158 species. Mark and I 
covered the lower part of the area and touched the south end of the lake, 
tallied 
152 species and only drove 84 miles! Mark, Nancy Moore and I ended the day at 
dark with Least Bittern and Marsh Wren at the handicap area of Black Bayou. 
Mark will serve up the details but unfortunately he left all the count sheets 
in 
my truck so here is an overview.

The birds were few and far between especially warblers. The count tallied all 
the expected egrets and herons plus an adult Tri-colored at Phillippy that 
eventually flew into Kentucky, only 9 species of waterfowl with unexpected 
Greater White-fronted Goose and male Canvasback but no Ruddy Ducks which 
normally 
summer there. There were 8 species of raptors but no Kestrel and 19 species of 
shorebirds with a beautiful breeding plumaged, female Wilson's Phalarope.

Flycatchers were almost nonexistent but we managed an Olive-sided. Two 
species of gulls and 5 species of terns were seen at Keystone including another 
beauty, Black Tern. All the expected woodpeckers sans Sapsucker, all the 
swallows, 
5 species of vireo, 3 species of wrens, no Hermit but all the other thrushes, 
only 17 species of warblers which is very low, and 8 species of sparrows but 
there were a bunch of new species in each category seen on Sunday.

Just think what could be found if the county had more than 6 people to do the 
count.
