As part of the Nashville Area Spring Count/Int'l Migratory Bird Day a
team including myself, Terry Witt and Jason Mann covered areas mainly
around the southern end of Percy Priest Lake down to Murfreesboro in
Rutherford County. Despite a general lack of migrants, we were
successful in finding many of the unique breeding birds for this area
including CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW, WHIP-POOR-WILL, SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER,
DICKCISSEL, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, BLUE GROSBEAK, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE,
BEWICK'S WREN, LARK SPARROW, lots of SUMMER TANAGERS and PRAIRIE
WARBLERS and both BLACK-CROWNED and YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. The
day's total came to 122 species.
 
However, probably the weirdest bird we found was a single AMERICAN PIPIT
at Poole Knobs WMA. Apparently this bird is only a day shy of the late
date for this species in Tennessee.
