Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN
some breeding birds at the marsh:
Least Bittern, 2 young last year
Canada Goose, 6 or so sitting on piles of cattail,
2 adults and 3 young (10" long?) last week.
Mallard, 1 nest with 12 eggs in March,
young apparently fledged
Blue-winged Teal, nest with 12 eggs May 1, 2004,
apparently 2 pairs
Virginia Rail.
6 sightings of young last week, at least 4 individuals,
pairs of parents apparently with young in at least 5
locations
Sora, probably breeding
Red-winged Blackbird
Last year I found 5 or so in May,
on saplings, about 4-5 ft high, above water
This year I have found 5 so far that were in
rushes or cattails, less than a foot above the water,
with 2 - 4 eggs, and about 4 under construction in
saplings.
It seems, based on this limited observation, that
they nest in late March and April in cattails or
rushes, no leaves on saplings yet, and then in late
April and May begin nesting in saplings, as the
leaves start to appear.
