I decided to do a little work on my KY list Sunday morning and came up with a
few bonus birds. About 1/2 mile east of the main entrance to the refuge at
Long Point, I was able to photograph a female Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. It
was feeding from the power lines at the side of the road. After locating the
Painted Bunting singing in the Hackberry Trees I headed back to TN only to
find a male Lark Sparrow just 300 yards north of the TN Line feeding along
the railroad tracks. It was drifting north at the time. Anyone in the area
near the State Line might watch out for this birds.
I did manage to add 7 species to my list with the aid of my Songfinder ears.
It sure was nice to be able to pick up on Parula and Cape May singing in the
tree tops on my own.
Later in the day, Nancy Moore and I were able to get brief glimpses of the
Painted and heard it sing from a concealed perch about 200 yards west of
where it had seemingly set up territory. It seemed to want to stay out of the
wind. I first heard it and saw it in the line of Hackberry Trees that run
back to the shed on the refuge road early that morning. Later we found it by
walking the RR tracks and it was heard singing north of the tracks in a
brushy area and seen crossing to the south side of the road.
Good Birding!!!
