Reelfoot Lake vicinity (Lake, Obion Co. TN & Fulton Co. KY)
5/7/03
Bird highlights from today were the White-winged Dove that Nancy previously
posted about, and singing Bell's Vireo late this afternoon in the same area of
Black Bayou Unit that I found the birds last August. Due to the amount of water
in the area, I couldn't get over to the right area to visually locate the bird,
but at least one Bell's is back in the area.
I began the day in a driving rain on the way over, but timing was great as the
rain stopped just as I got to Walnut Log. I spent the 1st half of the day with
a delightful lady from Arizona, who wanted to see a few of the eastern birds
she still needed. Swainson's Warbler was her #1 target, and while we had great
listens to one singing up a storm, it never would come out for us. Other lifers
on the day for her were Gray-cheeked Thrush, Cerulean Warbler, and Dickcissel.
Areas we visited included Walnut Log, Nancy Moore's yard!, "Eagle Hacking Rd",
Keystone Park, and along the levee.
Other birds of interest were:
Least Flycatcher (singing at Black Bayou)
Veery, Gray-cheeked, and Swainson's Thrushes (Walnut Log)
22 sp. of warblers including:
Tennessee (many)
Nashville (1)
Cape May (2 at Keystone, 1 at Nancy's)
Black-throated Green (1 Keystone)
Blackburnian (1)
Palm (4)
Bay-breasted (2 on Walnut Log, 1 at Keystone)
Blackpoll (several at Nancy's and Keystone)
Cerulean (1 Walnut Log)
Swainson's (1 Eagle Hacking Rd)
Ovenbird (2 Walnut Log)
N. Waterthrush (several)
Bobolink (1)
Other neotropics like Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Scarlet Tanager were
encountered numerous locations.
Shorebirds were very scarce and scattered out, as water covers practically
everything in the area, hopefully this will recede slowly and leave some
habitat for later migrants.
The White-winged Dove in Hickman is a real treat. I've posted a distant shot of
this bird in the "Uncommon to rare local birds (vol. 2) album at my site at:

Good birding!!!!!
