I observed a Willet this afternoon on Green Road in western Greene
County during a break in the heavy rainfall that the county experienced
for most of the day. The bird was near the road in a grassy field about
a half mile from Highway 348. Also present in the field were two Lesser
Yellowlegs and a Solitary Sandpiper. Elsewhere on Green Road were
Red-headed Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Summer Tanager.
Willet is a rare transient species in Greene County,
though--interestingly--this is the third consecutive year that it has
been observed here. The other occurrences were on 29 July 2001 (3 birds
on Jim Kirk Road, 7 birds at Wal-Mart Distribution Center) and 27 April
2002 (14 birds at Wal-Mart Distribution Center). Today's Willet was
located within three miles of where the others were observed.
