[TN-Bird] Bobolinks & Lark Sparrows (Carroll Co.) 5/3/03

McKenzie vicinity (Carroll Co.)
5/3/03
On my way home from work this morning I took a short detour to an area that has
produced good passages of warblers in the past, with very little to show for
it. Only local breeders were found in the short while I was out.
I finally had Bobolinks (18 that I could see with more that I missed I'm sure)
in a hay field that I've been expecting to get them in for the past 3 springs.
I could spend a day watching and listening to the antics of a flock of
Bobolinks (if only I had a day to it).
Just a short way off of Highway 79 southwest of McKenzie, I had a pair of Lark
Sparrows for only my 2nd Carroll Co. record (although most of the others are
within just a few miles of the county line). I heard one singing, and upon
stopping found the bird perched on a stalk in the middle of a field. Shortly
afterwards a 2nd Lark Sparrow flew in and landed at the base of the stalk the
male was singing from. These birds then foraged together, and flew across to
the other side of the field. This location is approximately a mile from where
I had my other Carroll Co. Lark sighting of a single bird in 2001. I didn't get
out to any of the Henry Co. locations.
Good birding!!!!
