On the way to do Goldenwinged Warbler surveys in Anderson County
early this morn Fri- 5-10-02 I decided to take a quick swing through
Cove Lake State Park, Campbell County near Caryville since I have been
out in the mountain areas recently finding Goldenwings and not checking
the park..
Great idea!! I found a CONNECTICUTT WARBLER almost immediatly.
(Explicit instructions to location below at END of this post.. ) I
quickly called Tony Headrick to come and see the bird, and also alerted
Harold Howell at home to post the bird since I would not have computer
access till late today. We were unable to locate the bird an hour and a
half later, but looking for this bird is still worth a try. (Especially
with the rain tonight, he may stay around)
Other good birds are around the park also that you could look for
including:
A WARBLING VIREO singing and seen this morn at the park

- SWAINSONS WARBLERS- (I found another Swainsons today behind the
campground area and across a little creek from the bath-house/ first time
I have heard one in this area. The others are on the short loop trail
near the overlook tower in the cul-de-sac parking area. I have sent
directions to these numerous times, so em me privately if anyone needs
further. This is a great chance to see Swainsons in E.TN, and many
birders have seen him the last 2 weeks including 2 people that drove up
from Chattanooga yesterday to see him. He is very cooperative.
-WILLOW FLYCATCHERS ( first for the Spring found yesterday by Ken
Cutsinger/TWRA) In the center of the park area, in the Willows of course.
_ Prothonotary Warblers can be seen at the overlook tower

***If anyone birds Cove Lake tomorrow, I would appreciate your reporting
your sightings and numbers of birds to me for inclusion in the
International Migration Day Count which takes place tomorrow.

Good luck for anyone that looks for this bird, and while in the park I
would certainly be on the lookout for Mourning Warbler too . Had one
there this time last year near the back loop trail near where the
Swainsons hangs out .

DIRECTIONS TO CONN. WARBLER LOCATION.
GO BACK INTO THE CAMPGROUND AREA.
Stay on the left loop. It will loop to the right at the sign saying "Keep
Right."
and branch L. Stay Right./ Go about 100 ft. and began looking on your
LEFT. You will see a large pile of dead Pine that has been cut down and
left for the campersfor firewood. I parked at CAMPSITE # 59. ( small
posts at campsite marked.)
You may have to park elsewhere though/ but this is the general vicinity
where the bird was.
WALK straight behind the pile of wood where there is a hill adjacent to
the swampy/beaver pond area. Began looking IMMEDIATLY behind the wood
pile at the edge of the pond etc. There are little bare /paths near
thickets throughout here and the bird was walking around here when first
seen. I flushed him, and he flew over across the waterway apx. 50 ft. to
a small island and continued singing. (I first heard him singing when I
got out of my vehicle)
