While looking for Golden-winged Warblers today in Laurel Bloomery, I
decidedto take a look at a rock cliff I spotted from the road. I climbed up
to the base of the rock to find a pile of branches below a nest ledge. With
the branches was a large black feather and some bedding material for a raven
nest. I have seen this same kind of bedding material in raven nests. The
ledge above was at a 35 degree slant- not very good for holding a nest. I
walked down the rock to find another pile of branches and another black
feather which I identified as a ravens. I climbed up between two sets of
rocks to check on a potential nest ledge. No nest was found, but as I
turnedaround to go back down a raven fledgling was staring at me from a
rock. An adult raven came shortly after, squawked and left. I talked to
theraven to calm it as I went by the fledgling. Atop the rock face I smelt
araven nest. They give off a particular odor. Later, I was able to find
thenest. It contained two nestlings. Allan Trently, Seasonal Ecologist
