Birders of KY, TN, AR, MS and LA

All of us have read about them, a lot of us have birdied them but here is
your chance to participate in the creation of one, The GREAT RIVER BIRDING
TRAIL. It stretches from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, situated in, arguably
the greatest flyway in North America and is only half complete at this time.
The upper reaches of the Mississippi River, as you will read below, already
has a full set of colorful and informative maps available free to the public.
I've seen the set and they are very attractive and well done and something
anyone would be proud to have been associated with in their creation.

Now you have a chance to help in putting together an even better set with
your input for the above mentioned states. Contacts are listed at the end of
this announcement from Bonnie Koop, Birding Trail Coordinator.

Good Birding!!!

THE GREAT RIVER BIRDING TRAIL
Call for Site Nominations for the Lower Mississippi River

WHAT IS THE GREAT RIVER BIRDING TRAIL?

You can now take a self-guided birding tour on the northern reaches of what
is one of America's longest birding trails. The Great River Birding Trail is
named after the federally designated scenic drive called the Great River
Road, which runs from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. In general, the sites
include established wildlife refuges, parks, overlooks and other attractions
no more than 25 to 30 miles from the Great River Road. Nominated sites should
be accessible by auto, bike or on foot.

Currently, the Great River Birding Trail parallels both sides of the upper
Mississippi River from the headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, downstream
for 1,366 miles to the confluence with the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois. It
covers both sides of the upper Mississippi River through Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. Ten full-color and illustrated maps,
available free to the public, depict the great places to go bird watching
along the river. To request a sample map or set of maps, contact the Audubon
Birding Trail Coordinator, Bonnie Koop, at <A
HREF="mailto:bkoop@xxxxxxxxxxx";>bkoop@xxxxxxxxxxx</A>. Audubon and its
partners now are extending the trail to the Gulf of Mexico.

CREATING A 10-STATE BIRDING TRAIL: SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS

The Audubon-Upper Mississippi River Campaign is working with Audubon
Mississippi and the Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee (LMRCC) to
complete the birding trail in the lower Mississippi River valley to the Gulf
of Mexico.

Great River Road? You can help to complete the Great River Birding Trail in
Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana by
nominating great sites.
