[tn-bird] Wilson?s warbler & Summer tanagers- Beverly Park, Knoxville

While on the meadow trail at Beverly Park around 7 pm yesterday,
we were looking intently at a beautiful Magnolia warbler in the
low-lying shrubs. A small bird caught our eye hopping around in
a nearby thicket. We both had clean looks w/ the binoculars at
a male Wilson?s warbler from 15- 20 ft. away, 3 ft. above
ground. What a fine looking bird he was with that prominent
black cap against the bright yellow. We revisited the area 45
min. after our walk, & the bird was not seen.
The summer tanagers have also returned to Beverly Park (we heard
& saw a pair for most of last summer). We tracked down the
calls, saw the female first, then the male nearby. The male
summer tanager chased the female at high speed for a brief
moment, before the female flew off to another distant part of
the woods.
Also seen were barn swallows working the small pond, & field
around the paved track, a first year blue grosbeak, indigo
buntings, eastern meadowlark, great-crested flycatcher, & am.
goldfinches.
Also spotted at the waters edge of the drainage pond were 5
shiny green bullfrogs. A green heron resided there for a good
portion of the summer last year & feasted on them regularly.
Beverly Park is located in North Knoxville just off Tazewell
Pike beside the Jr. Golf Course & Hillcrest Nursing Home.
