This afternoon, May 3, my binoculars trained on an unusual sight out our back 
door: one Chipping Sparrow, one White-throated Sparrow in full adult spring 
plumage, and one White-crowned Sparrow--the first White-crowned we have seen 
in eight years at this location near Radnor Lake--and the first my wife had 
ever seen.  She could not have had a better side-by-side comparison of the 
sparrows.

To their left, on the ground, was a male Towhee; on the platform feeder, 
three Cardinals; on the cylinder black-oil feeder, the usual hungry House 
Finches; on the thistle-seed feeder, a great gathering of Goldfinches; and 
above them all, a pair of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, with the male singing 
softly and tentatively.

All in all, quite an afternoon for sparrows and their kin.

Meanwhile, our five Phoebe hatchlings are doing well in their first week of 
life.
