I met Robert Gooch at the pits this AM to get him his lifer Upland. We had
great success with close looks at 12 Uplands, 7 were in view at one location
and another 5 just across the road. Checking the pits, we came up with a
different Dunlin from the one we had on Thursday. We watched the skies
suddenly
filled with tightly packed, swirling specks, like shattering safety glass; a
Peregrine blasted through at 11 AM, and cleared the decks. There were less
than
5 birds in view on two pits, where minutes before there had been a couple of
thousand feeding Wind Birds. The total species and numbers appeared to be
about the same as Saturday except for the added Dunlin.
The shorebirds were just trickling back in over the next hour so we decided
to check the Uplands and Golden-Plovers just south of Memphis in MS. The first
two stops produced 50+ Golden-Plovers and 9 Upland Sandpipers. A tour of
likely habitat over the next few hours produced another 124 Plovers and an
astounding 27 Uplands in 3 different fields. We also had a couple of dozen
American Pipits feeding in with the Plovers and Pipers..............
Wind Birds on this brisk day, 11 cool species including; 190+ Golden Plovers
and 46 UPLAND SANDPIPERS!!
Good Birding !!!
