A bird walk by the Herndon Chapter of TOS at Tipton-Haynes Historic Site in
Johnson City on Saturday, March 31, found 31 birds and enjoyed about that many
participants.
Highlights: Great Blue Herons (flying over prior to the official walk),
Pileated Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Brown
Thrasher
and Eastern Bluebird.

After the walk, chapter members Kim Stroud, Joe McGuinness, Reece Jamerson
and Bryan Stevens made a birding trip to Austin Springs near Johnson City and
the South Holston weir dam and Paddlecreek Pond, both near Bristol.

They found a Great Egret at Austin Springs, as well as Savannah and Swamp
Sparrows. On the way out, they met Rick Knight, who pointed out a perched
Osprey.

At the weir dam, they enjoyed looks at the Surf Scoter reported by others,
and also found a Yellow-throated Warbler, having been told by Knight that some
of these were signing near the weir dam.

Paddlecreek Pond was rather empty, except for the faithful Mute Swan.

Bryan Stevens,
Hampton, TN
