Yesterday, 4/1/06, we drove around to a few sites along Douglas Lake in
Cocke county in the afternoon. The lake is at 965', relatively low for this
time of year & not yet flooding the bottoms.
We saw ospreys at 5 nests on: a silo at Dutch Bottoms, a silo at Ten
Islands (viewed from Browns Hollow Rd), the coal tipple at Rankin Bottoms,
the old Rankin Bridge, and on a cottonwood snag on the west bank of the
river, downstream from the old bridge.
FOS Cliff swallows were active at the new Rankin Bridge, where there were
700 nests in 2005. We didn't see any cormorants or great blue herons at
last year's nests along the French Broad. (11 nests are visible from Holt
Town Rd where it turns east at McCowans Creek).
Also: at Dutch Bottoms (very windy yesterday)
Canada goose (60)
Double-crested cormorants (42)
Great Blue Heron (35)
Turkey vulture (15)
Ring-billed gull (6)
Killdeer
Rankin Bottoms:
Blue-winged teal (70)
Redhead?(spooked by a passing truck before a conclusive i.d.; would have
been a lifer)
Wild turkey (near the tipple)
Greater yellowlegs (8 - at the trestle pond, across from the Leadvale boat
launch)
Lesser yellowlegs (2 - as above)
Winter wren (Birder's Point, east of the tipple)
Yellow-rumped warbler (8)
Savannah sparrow
et al. (several other unfamiliar species of spastic little birds)
