I've had eastern phoebes nesting over the front door for 12 consecutive 
years. I added a shelf to support the nest and clean it off after the 
fledglings leave. There's always a second clutch, and sometimes a third.  
Nests have been wiped out by black rat snakes several times.  One night, in 
the dark, Leslie reached for the door handle and wrapped her hand around the 
belly of a 6-foot snake.  Her scream may have caused the cracked pane in the 
stained glass door panel.  I caught and banished the snake, and that clutch 
was successful.
