Rankin Bottoms, Douglas Lake. Elevation at 10 am on 4-11-05: 980.40.
The short-billed dowitcher and lesser scaup were at Rankin Bottoms today
(April 11, 2005). Other birds of note:
Eastern Kingbird: 3 (I had my first eastern kingbirds at Rankin Bottoms on
4-5-05)
Osprey: 4 (two active nests)
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher- 6 (a pair building a nest. Nest looked nearly
complete)
Ring-billed Gull- 4
Prothonatary Warbler: 7
Canada Goose: 10
Mallard: 17
Red-breasted Merganser: 1
Herring Gull: 1
Killdeer: 4 (I saw 3 chicks out of the nest on below Douglas Dam on 4-8-05)
Greater Yellowlegs: 34
Lesser Yellowlegs: 2 (probably more)
Pectoral Sandpiper: 1
Dunlin: 1 (was here on 4-8-05)
Double-crested Cormorant: 1
Blue-winged Teal: 26
Least Sandpiper: 21
Lesser Scaup: 1
Short-billed Dowitcher: 1
An immature bald eagle was seen on 4-8-05
No great blue herons, wood duck, green-wing teal were seen on 4-11-05.
Approximately 30-40 cars seen parked at Rankin Bottoms.
Other birds of note seen at Rankin Bottoms on 4-8-05:
Great blue heron: 21
Great Egret: 1
wood duck: 4
Greater Yellowlegs: 3
Canada Goose: 11
Double-crested Cormorant: 3
Blue-wing teal: 26
Mallard: 12
Wood duck: 16
Bald eagle: 1 (immature)
