We set up some mist nets to try to catch more sparrows in the restored 
grasslands as a part of our ongoing research at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge 
in SE 
Knox County.  We caught and banded 4 Swamp Sparrows and 3 Field Sparrows.  We 
also recaptured 2 Swamp Sparrows that were banded 3 weeks ago (which may 
indicate the Swamp Sparrows are not moving north yet).
During one of the net checks we found two bright yellow birds with long black 
bills and really strong feet hanging upside-down in one of our nets.  They 
had a little bit of white in their mostly back tail feathers.  The pair was 
hanging in the net about a foot apart at eye level.  It looked like one was 
chasing the other when they hit the nets.  We carefully removed the birds from 
the 
net, and took them back to the banding station to compare them to the pictures 
in my bird guides. 

I am not accustomed to these colorful transients showing up in the nets  
(Give me a "Little brown job" any day!).  After thumbing through the relatively 
unused warbler section in my guide, we were able to confirm we had two 
Prothonotary Warblers in our bird bags.  They each received their numbered 
USFWS 
aluminum band, and they were released to continue their journey north.

Finally, when we were closing up the nets for the day we found a single 
American Goldfinch in the very bottom of one of our nets.  Now there is another 
yellow bird with a little aluminum band.
