[TN-Bird] Head crests as vertical stabilizers?

I caught a Female Northern Cardinal in flight as i was photographing today and
noticed in the picture that her head crest was raised as high as she could get
it. Is it possible that these raised head crests in the birds that have them
serve a similar purpose as the vertical stabilizer in an airplane? This
picture can be found at www.imagestation.com in the album Thorns Birds,
picture # 117.

Good Birding!
