[TN-Bird] Costa Rica!

Yesterday we went down to San Luis research station which is operated by
the University of Georgia at Athens. It is a beautiful place in a
valley at about 3000 ft elevation. We had the enjoyable experience of
hearing a three-waddled bell bird but it successfully eluded our search
for it.

There are lots of migrants in Dev's yard and in the area in general.
Black-throated green, Wilson's, and Tennessee warblers are pretty
common. Baltimore orioles are in full plumage and we have seen several
along with a few summer, scarlet and hepatic tanagers. Last night we
went for a night walk with a guide at the bottom of Dev's driveway.
Among other creatures, we saw sleeping wood thrush, Swainson's thrush,
ovenbird, brown jays and Wilson's warblers. It is just a little
bizarre to see them roosting so far from home. The trip list is great
now, and I will be happy even if we don't see another new bird while we
are here! I suspect that there is little danger of that since we plan
to leave the cloud forest this morning and head to the coast and rain
forest for four days with professional guides.

It would be hard to find better hosts than Dev and Harriet. Great food
and great accommodations. It has made our first international birding
adventure a great experience so far!

Wish you were here!
