I made a quick trip Tue. in search of the American-golden Plover off Turner
Lane (Greene Co. off rt. 340, I-81 exit 15). No luck, only a few Killdeer
cousins were around at 11 AM. I did have 45 species in the next hour and
half, near by. I went back to rt. 348, and went about a mile East to the
TWRA Wildlife refuge where 348 crosses Lick creek. I took a walk in the NW
quadrant of the area (I did need my rubber boots, for the 2-4 inches of
waterin some areas) and found some good species. The Western edge of the
property has a 'wet weather' pond that held: Greater Yellowlegs (1),
LesserYellowlegs (3), Mallards (12), Blue-winged Teal (22), and Green-winged
Teal (10). In the cattail area I found a swamp sparrow, and a Sedge Wren
(on the fourth try, heard the call, but it wouldn't show with the pishing.
The last time I just walked up, and it popped up.) Along Lick creek, I
alsosaw N. Harriers (2), Red-shouldered Hawks (2) calling to each other,
Ruby-crowned kinglet, and a tree with 11 Rusty blackbirds. ( They were all
setting in the forks and on the larger limbs, not perched on the small
ones). Heading back to Hamblen Co. I had a Horned Lark in the plowed
fields to the West. Any day birding, is a good day! Ben Britton
