Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN
April 14, 2004
Virginia Rail, estimate at least 20
At one location one jumped up about five feet in front of me, and landed in
plain sight about five feet to my side, agitated, making lots of noise and
making no effort to hide. A second one appeared a few feet away on the other
side, also in plain sight and making a lot of noise. I looked briefly for a
nest, then retreated, the rails leading me back the way I had come. I think a
third rail was also close and similarly agitated. They quieted somewhat and
hid when I got about 60 feet away.
I would suggest that there was a nest there, but wonder about the 3rd bird. It
seems much too early for young, and the 3rd bird, if that's what it was, was
full size.
Other Virginia Rails were active and noisy all over the marsh, but these 2 or 3
were the only ones I saw more than briefly.
Sora, estimate more than 10, also noisy
King Rail, neither seen nor heard
Snipe, at least 10
Osprey
