[TN-Bird] Eagle and osprey nests

We watched a Bald Eagle serve a carp to 2 nestlings high in a white oak on
upper Douglas Lake in Cocke county late yesterday afternoon. Both adults then
perched nearby, occasionally flying past us overhead or hovering momentarily,
extending talons and reversing direction. We decided to leave because of their
uneasiness. According to Stokes' Guide to Bird Behavior, human approach during
the early-nestling phase may be a major cause of nest abandonment by bald
eagles.
Later on, we observed a pair of ospreys at a nest about 100 yards down from the
old Rankin Bridge, in a tree on the west riverbank. That makes a total of 5
active osprey nests from the bridge to Dutch Bottoms. The pair on the coal
tipple at Rankin Bottoms don't seem to mind the traffic directly below them and
can be seen at close range.
