Musick's Campground
South Holston Lake
Sullivan County
Three Caspian Terns, which may be a record early date for Northeast
Tennessee, were seen just before sunset as they left for roost with several
hundred gulls.
The gull flock was composed of about 100 Bonaparte's and 200 Ring-billed.
Six Eared Grebes, in nearly full breeding colors, were nearby.
A group of 34 Double-crested Cormorants arrived at sunset, flying in very
high and eventually settling on the lake.
One Red-breasted Merganser was just off shore.
The Great Blue Heron rookery, a few miles away along Pemberton Road, showed
no signs of activty and only a few old nests.
Our first Green Heron of the spring was perched in the Painter Creek Green
Heron rookery where more than a dozen old nests remain from previous years.
We anticipate several pairs to again nest here this spring.
One of the state's largest wintering populations of Buffleheads, which
frequent the Weir Dam just below South Holston Lake, may be down to less
than a dozen birds -- we counted just seven.
Rack Cross and Wallace Coffey were afield together most of the afternoon and
Tom McNeil, and son J.T., joined us at Musick's Campground for the last
hour before sunset.
Let's go birding....
