A couple of hours after work yesterday morning afforded me my 1st taste of the
passerine migration that is upon us. Six species of warblers were seen, with
Parula's buzzing up a storm in most suitable habitat. Also seen were Palm (1),
and several each of Yellow-rumped, Pine, Yellow-throated, and LA. Waterthrush.
Other breeding passerines included Yellow-throated Vireo and a few
Gnatcatchers. Two Broad-winged Hawks were also spring 1st for me. Winter
holdouts included singing Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Hermit Thrush.
Interesting to watch was a Cooper's Hawk which chose the wrong area to soar, as
a very agitated male Kestrel was on it repeatedly like you know what. The Coop
got the picture pretty quick and left for more peaceful surroundings.
Good birding!!
