[TN-Bird] NOTICE TO ALL SUBSCRIBERS

TN-Birders:

Please do not use abbreviations such as:

FOY
FOTY
FSR
FSM
FOTS
LWR
LOW
LSR

These are not standard abbreviations. For the most part they are not even
widely used. One or two other state lists have had some trouble with these
causing subscribers to have to write and ask the person posting what the
abbreviation means. These are not even widely used terms on any state lists
that I have seen.

I have seen one or two other messages on other state lists starting to again
use alpha codes for species. Even alpha codes, while widely used in field
studies, are not standard. Many of them are very confusing. There are
rules but it depends upon the system you use for what rules you wish to
apply. All kinds of conflicts appear between various rules. The Breeding
Bird Survey uses one set and the Bird Banding Lab has another set of alpha
codes. These are not widely available to all birders.

If you have a long list of species in which you need to use codes for
locations, alpha codes (you make up or made from rules) for species, please
list the full location and full species name after each one the first time
it is used in the message text.

Let's make sure we continue to provide all subscribers a user-friendly and
easy to read list that is not full of insider chat and abbreviations that
may confuse many of our list subscribers.

Thanks for your help.

Let's go birding....
