[TN-Bird] Dutch and Rankin Bottoms

Hi folks,

Sorry I couldn't post earlier, but I stopped at these Cocke County,
TN locations on my way out of state to teach a Wilderness First Aid
course this weekend.

On the way in, I didn't see the pelicans at Dutch Bottoms, and just
assumed I'd missed them by a day or so.

I couldn't drive much past the RR tracks into Rankin Bottoms because
the mud was too much for Tracey's Saturn, so I hiked in. I saw
several Osprey over the course of 2 hours, including a nest on the
dead railroad tressle, a nest atop the coal tipple (as Michael
Sledjeski reported a week or more ago) and a couple birds fishing
here and there.

I saw many swallows, with Tree being the most numerous, followed by
Northern Rough-winged, then Barn.

Common Yellowthroats were singing in several places (my first of
year) as were many Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and 2 different
Ruby-crowned Kinglets.

The only waterfowl I could locate were 3 Wood Ducks, 4 Blue-winged
Teal and a couple Mallards.

The only shore birds I could find were the occasional Killdeer and at
least 50 Wilson's Snipe, which were quite close to the road and
easily observable.

On my way out, I saw 5 American White Pelicans at Dutch Bottoms.
Thank you Michael!

Up near Christiansburg, VA, there was a Louisiana Waterthrush singing
all weekend, so they've made it at least that far. It may have been
the first time I've ever heard one sing while snow was falling...
