"A Com. Raven was seen in the old quarry on Wahoo Valley Rd., about 1 mile
below Boone Dam. I scanned for, but saw no evidence of, a nest. Part of
the quarry wall is not easily seen. Also, there are some nice cliffs along
the river within sight of this spot. I have seen ravens in this general
area several times in the last 10 years or so."
Upon exploring the quarry today (4-12-03), I located one active raven nest.
This site is approximately 400 meters (about 1320 feet). This makes it the
lowest elevation site in Tennessee on record. The previous record was at
the American Limestone Quarry in Carter County, which is aproximately 450
meters.
The Wahoo nest is the second raven nest for Sullivan County. The first is
in Shady Valley. Currently only 13 nest sites have ever been known, at
least to my knowledge, in Tennessee. All have been on rock cliffs. Ravens
are known to nest in trees and upon man-made structures.
