An alternate-plumaged Eared Grebe was noted from
the campground at Floating Mill Recreation Area,
Center Hill Lake, DeKalb Co., TN, this morning 
0915-0930 CDT.  First seen by Pat Collins and
Carol Williams, who may have seen the same bird
at the same site in March, it was also observed
by me, Winston Walden, Catherine Walden, Graham
Kash, Marty McKnight, Ted McKnight, Betty Bright,
and Nancy Layzer.  Distance to the grebe was
great, probably 1-2 kilometers, but viewing
conditions were excellent (sun to our backs,
clear skies, little wind and so calm water).
We used Carol's 20-60X Kowa scope to i.d. the bird,
which displayed the classic features of the 
species--black neck, peaked crown, and wispy,
golden "ears" radiating back from the eyes.
While we viewed the bird, it was diving fairly
regularly and was not noted near any other
birds for size comparison, but such a comparison
was not really necessary.
