Brainerd Levee, Chattanooga, TN, April 6, 2003
American Bittern: mile 1.0 from Shallowford Road, easy to see, at edge of water
near base of levee, 50 ft from road, 8:30 to 10:30 am. Unfortunately two dogs
came along and flushed it up, and it flew across the marsh.
Great Egret: mile 1.2
Green Heron: mile 1.8
Greater Yellowlegs: behind Boyd School
Turkey: 1 in horse pasture at mile 0.4, 1 on side of levee at mile 1.2
Blue-winged Teal: 80+, many paired off, very vocal (I'm not sure I have heard
them quack before), some courtship or threat displays (rapidly raising and
lowering head)
Yellowthroat: 1 heard at mile 1.0, 1 heard and seen along power line near mile
1.6
Hermit Thrush: 1 along power line, 1 in woods near Brainerd Complex
