I should have been prepared, since last week at a funeral, I noticed the
red buckeyes planted in the cemetery were on the verge of blooming, and
these blooms always seem to coincide with the first ruby throats of spring.
I put off getting out the feeders, though, and then yesterday, out of the
corner of my eye, caught a zipping little movement across the corner of the
porch. Twenty minutes later, I had all the feeders scrubbed clean and
filled with fresh "juice" but no customers. I lay down by one of the dogs
sunning on the porch and fell asleep. About an hour later, I woke to a
slight sunburn on one side of my face, and hummingbirds buzzing gently
overhead around the feeders. Two of them keep company in the ash tree just
off the porch and seem to be spending a lot of time just resting.
