Controlled Burn Planned for Far Western End of Smokies

If the weather cooperates on Thursday, April 3 fire management

specialists at Great Smoky Mountains National Park expect to conduct
a 127 acre planned burn just east of U.S. 129 at the western end of
the Park in Blount County, TN.

Thursday's fire, dubbed the Tabcat Creek Burn, is being
conducted to stimulate yellow pine reproduction as well as to enhance
the area's suitability as habitat for the endangered Red Cockaded
Woodpecker RCW. The last known RCW nesting activity in the Smokies
was observed in this area in 1982 and has not been seen since, due in
part to changes in the forest composition.

Red Cockaded Woodpeckers nest exclusively in live, mature pines
located in open, park-like communities without surrounding underbrush
taller than about 9-12 feet. In areas that have not been subjected to
fire for decades, a deciduous understory grows up around the nesting
cavities, discouraging further use. The objective of Thursday's burn
is to reduce the density of the small, fire sensitive hardwoods by as
much as 90%.

The burn site is located about ? mile west of U.S. 129 near
Lake Chilhowee. The fire perimeter is made up of a variety of creeks
with a short section of pre-constructed fire control line to tie the
drainages together. In addition at least 20 firefighters will be on
hand to ignite the burn and keep it within its prescribed boundaries.

Media Note: From an access standpoint the burn is not near any trails
and is quite inaccessible. Depending on time of day and wind speed
and direction some smoke columns make be visible from either the
Foothills Parkway or from the Calderwood
overlook along U.S. 129.
