[TN-Bird] Re: weekend yard birds - Knox

I don't live far from Dean in West Knox County but don't have nearly as many
yard birds as he does. in the low 20s. Last Thursday I had the first robins in
the yard in some time, about half a dozen sitting in a circle on the rim of the
clay birdbath (about 16" diameter) I keep on the ground in my back yard.
Friday the birdbath drew a frenzied flock of about 20 Cedar Waxwings which were
not seen again over the weekend. Yesterday, Sunday, I heard what sounded to me
like a Common Grackle, but as it seemed to be having a conversation with an
Eastern Towhee I considered the possibility that it was an especially hoarse
towhee. First the grackle would sound its creaky towEE, then the towhee its
more melodic TowEE; they kept up this conversation for about 5 minutes. I
never managed to spot the bird but this morning as I was leaving for work I
again heard the grackle (minus the towhee) and I'm sure it is indeed a grackle.
I also saw a Common Gracke at Turkey Creek on Saturday, my first of the
year/winter season. I still have at least one Red-Breasted Nuthatch coming to
the feeders and the beautiful Yellow Rumped Warbler who has been around all
winter (and every other winter) is still here.
