Haywood, Shelby Co. TN
Saturday, two Purple Martins entertained us in Haywood Co, they seemed plumb
tickled at finding open housing. Sunday early, I spent some time scanning
the much reduced scaup flock at Robco. I found the Long-tailed Duck sleeping
in.
I called Gail King as she had missed the bird on Saturday and found that she
was already on her way. She arrived and ferreted out the bird for herself
and we were joined by Robert Gooch. The L-t decided to feed and swam up close
for some photos.
Robert went up to Coro Lake to check on the scoter but could not find it but
did find a cooperative Common Loon starting to change into its spring
finery. While enjoying this fine bird we were rewarded with Fish Crows, one
ferrying food or nesting material to their regular nesting area where they
have
raised young over the past few years. Also in one field of view we had an
adult
Bald Eagle, a Red-shouldered Hawk and DC Cormorants circling above with a
Black Vulture over the tree line.
The Great Horned Owl nests in DeSoto Co, and Ensley both have youngsters and
the female Bald Eagle at Ensley sits tight on her nests. There has been a
BIG drop in raptor numbers from last week.
I've posted today's photos of the L-t Duck, young owls, Common Loon and
adult Eagle at:
