Black Bayou
Off of Hwy 78 N. of Tiptonville
Lake co, TN
Spring is definitely in the air. Birds are on the move. When I drove in from
town and my walk I had over 300 Bonaparte Gulls & 30 D. C. Cormorants feeding
on shad in the lake behind my B&B. As I watched two Osprey showed up in my
binoc field and I followed them to their nest which is right across the lake.
later one joined the gulls, briefly. Nothing like an unwelcome dinner guest.
Those are the first Osprey I have seen on the lake this year. We had 12 nests
just on the Upper Blue Basin last year. Saw two N. Harriers today in Black
Bayou. Watched a Bonaparte Gull dive bombing a Pied Billed Grebe earlier in the
day. Grebe had to keep going under water. It had a shad in its mouth at on the
onstart of the attack. Three Black Vultures were sharing a tidbit near Black
Bayou in a field. There is a Great horned Owl nest on Hwy 78 that we are
monitoring. Its in a hollow where a large limb had broke off. There are two
gray fluffies in there with tuffs. They are so cute. Checked on the Barn Owl
today but he was not home but lots of evidence of his presence and some of it
was out side and you can see where it roosts up high on the outside of the bldg
under an overhang.
Sunday, March 4, I found 2 Lesser Yellowlegs at the intersection of Herron rd
and Phillipy rd. on the left and 2 Am. Pipits and a pipit on the Phillippy Rd
further down toward the Back side of the AirPark Inn. Had aprox. 100 Wilson's
Snipe in the rice field closest to the Black Bayou Waterfowl Refuge. Aprox. 50
Cedar Waxwings in the Red Maple and Cypress trees in my front yard by the lake.
There were 3 Bald Eagles in the big tree near the Phillippy unit of Black
Bayou. Lots of AM. Coots, N. Shovelers, some Gadwall, a few Green wing teal.
As they say, Lets go birding!!
