Metro Nashville's newest park, Bell's Bend in N.W. Davidson Co.
Nashville area birders are excited to finally have access to Bell's Bend
Park, a large (aprox. 1,000 acres) area of rolling fields, tree lines and
bottom
land. There are plans for wildlife enhancement, shorebird ponds etc., for
the future, but right now it is one of the best spots around Nashville for
experiencing Am. Woodcock displays. On a sunset walk there Sarah Scott and
Richard Connors observed the following:
Am. Woodcock - 8 heard or seen
Great-horned Owl - 1 perched in treeline
N. Harrier - 1
Song Sparrow - 100+
White-throated Sparrow -100+
Swamp Sparrow - 10

The woodcocks in Bell's Bend doe not surprise me. Over the years, I've
reported two at my West Nashville (Charlotte Park) house (one flying across
the
property & one spending a couple of evenings nestled under a rhododendron
which used to be in my yard. It flew up a couple of times when I "scared
it.")
My house is just across the river plus about a quarter mile from the park.
Those woodcocks have probably been over there for a long time. I can't wait
to be well enough to go to the park, although I may not be able to walk much.
From time to time, all the birds Richard mentioned have been in my yard, and
THAT great horned owl or its mate is probably my regular yard visitor that
also comes to the boat ramp parking area on my side of the river from the
park.
I call it in for our Christmas count, and it was on time this year as usual.
