Today was a good day for birding at my house. The day started out with 2
American Pipits (there may have been 4), Yard bird #133, followed by nearly 200
Sandhill Cranes, with more to follow later on. I had 3 purple finches at the
feeder (2 males and 1 female), they're starting to become more common now.
Around 3:00 PM, my friend Zack Barrow and I saw 1 Fox Sparrow (yard bird #134!)
It's amazing to get 2 yard birds in one day , it doesn't happen very often now
days. A little while after the Fox Sparrow, we saw a male Ruby-crowned kinglet
with his bright red crown up showing off to another kinglet. Around 6:20 PM,
another family and I headed to the "Woodcock grounds", where we observed the
male from about 3 or 4 feet away at one time. In the past, I had thought I had
seen females, but wasn't sure because we have bats, and when you get a quick
glance at a woodcock flying, they look quite a bit like bats. Tonight, however,
I have solid evidence of another woodcock (most likely female), we saw the bird
fly over us while the male was calling. It landed nearby, but when I shone the
light on it, it flew. The male didn't mind the presence of 6 people and a dog.
