Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blount Co. TN and Swain Co, NC
On Saturday March 4 2006 a friend and I hiked up to Clingman's Dome from the
Twentymile Ranger Station near Deals Gap in North Carolina. Spend the night
at Camp 13 on the state line between Parson Bald and Gregory Bald, and then
hiked down via a different trail on Sunday.
At sunset on March 4, we heard at least one and possibly two American
Woodcocks performing their courtship flight at Gregory Bald along the state
line. Never heard them peenting, but the temperature was in the low 30's
and the wind was 15-20 mph out of the N-NE.
As usual for this time of year in the Smokies, the overall bird list was
low. Other birds observed included:
Ruffed Grouse - only 2, and none heard drumming
Turkey - about 20 in flock along NC 28 near Deals Gap
Barred Owl - 1 calling during the night at the campsite (as was a coyote)
Pileated Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Blue Jay
American Crow
Common Raven - 1 at the campsite on March 4
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Chickadee
Unidentified Chickadees
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Winter Wren
Golden-crowned Kinglet
American Robin
Cedar Waxwing
Dark-eyed Junco
