TN-Birders,

 

Yesterday (3-7-05) was another fly day for Sandhill Cranes.  We heard lots
of birds about 12:30pm as they were thermalling east of our house.  When we
finally got to a place  where we could see them, two large vees had formed
and they were headed north with 100 birds in the front one and 75 in the
second one.  We live on the north side of Dale Hollow Lake here in Pickett
County and about .2 miles from the lake.  We are about 200 feet above the
lake and I suspect the steep topography creates the updrafts which the
cranes use to thermal upward to gain altitude.  I guess I should thank God
for small favors - - it sure gives us some interesting looks at Sandhills.
