Reelfoot Area
I found Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs in random wet areas all around the
Reelfoot area. At Phillippy Pits, I discovered 2 American Golden-Plovers pacing
the area south of the road. There were a lot of Yellowlegs and Wilson's Snipe
on
both sides of the road.
Just north in Kentucky, I photographed another trio of Golden-Plovers along
with numerous Wilson's Snipe, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs.
The big duck concentration is out from Samburg on Reelfoot Lake as the lower
area of the lake was covered with fishermen and boats running in every
direction. I did see Purple Martins, Tree and Barn Swallows spread around along
with
lots of Pipits, Horned Lark pairs and gulls in the fields. Waterfowl are a
little spotty but some large concentrations of Blue-winged, Green-winged and
Wigeon were found along the Great River Road with a few other species sprinkled
in
the mix.
In the last week the Mississippi River jumped up 20 FEET and is coming over
the area inside the levees and backing up water into the Obion and Hatchie
River bottoms and they are spilling out over the fields. Habitat for migrating
waterfowl, herons and egrets might be very good again this year. Bring em on!
Good Birding!!!
