Musick's Lakeside Campground and vicinity (Sullivan Co., TN)

Alice Loftin, Linda Northrop, and I went to Musick's Lakeside Campground
today in hopes of finding the Red-necked Grebe observed there by Wallace
Coffey and Larry McDaniel yesterday. We arrived at a little before noon
and were not disappointed. Within minutes, the grebe appeared at
considerable distance across the water on the Virginia side of the
lake. However, it seemed to be feeding and was moving rapidly toward
the Tennessee side, diving for prolonged periods and re-surfacing far
from where it was last seen. After struggling for a few minutes to get
a good view in the scope, we finally zeroed in on it as it remained on
the surface for about a half minute near the Tennessee shore.

Thanks, Wallace and Larry, for the posting yesterday.

Also present at Musick's were three Pied-billed Grebes (Virginia side),
one Horned Grebe (also on the Virginia side), and two Tree Swallows.
Linda was the first to spot a Tree Swallow, as she scanned the Tennessee
shore for the grebe, and later two were seen on the Virginia side flying
toward the Washington County shore.

One additional note: as we travelled to Musick's, we chanced upon an
immature Bald Eagle on Highway 394 about 1.5-2.0 miles south of Highway
421. The bird circled over a ridge to the east of Highway 394 for about
a half minute before disappearing on the other side. It appeared to be
a second-year eagle.
