Forks of the River WMA
Knoxville, TN
Sunday evening there was a Knoxville TOS field trip to Forks of the River
Wildlife Management Area to look for American Woodcocks. Six people braved
what looked like might be bad weather - though it cleared up nicely as we met
to start the trip.
I did not have a chance to scout the area this year and so didn't know where
would be best to listen for these birds' 'peenting'. We heard no birds from
the field we stopped at last year (for those who know the area, this is the
field on the right before the silo) but we heard a few in the next field - one
on the right past the silo - way up on the far hillside.
Because the sky had cleared, it made it almost impossible to see the birds do
their mating display flight, but we did manage to hear at least 3 birds, and
saw one other one fly.
I assume birds will still be calling from the clearings in the cedar woods up
past the marsh, where we often go to try to get a look at one on the ground,
but the path was very wet and muddy.
Chorus frogs were very loud from the marsh, as usual.
We heard no owls - about half the time we get at least one screech owl.
On another note, Bob Collier of north Knox County called to report a female
Rose-breasted Grosbeak in his yard. This is several days earlier than usual
early migrants of this species.
