[TN-Bird] Windy day at Kingston Steam Plant

On a brief visit to Kingston Steam Plant in Roane County, Tennessee Sunday
afternoon I observed 15 unsuspecting buffleheads on the Hazardous Chemicals
pond to the right as you walk in.

The landscape is much changed since my last visit several months ago and
there weren't many waterfowl around. On the first big pond on the left in
the distance there were at least 100 ring billed gulls mostly sitting around
on the water. Near them I could make out 4 small dark waterfowl so distant
that even through the scope they were merely the impression of ducks; this
after I had walked partway up the hill and out toward the water on a newly
bulldozed section. The wind was so strong that I was afraid to take my hand
off the tripod for fear it would blow away and the skies were threatening,
so I didn't stay long.

From the same vantage point I observed a great blue heron flying away from
me toward the parking lot and eventually into the trees beyond the railroad
tracks that cross the road near the ballfield. It was dangling something
long. At first I thought it must have become tangled in fishing line but on
reflection, it may have been carrying nesting material (let's hope so; it is
that time of year). I could never get a good enough look to see much
detail. Would the herons be nesting in the trees so far from the water?
