HI folks,
On Thursday, March 4, I heard my first singing BROWN CREEPER of the
year in Cades Cove (Great Smoky Mountians National Park, Blount
County)
On Friday I observed 5 or 6 TREE SWALLOWS in Townsend, Blount County,
Tennessee.
On the other hand, we still have a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in our
yard in Maryville, Blount County.
Here are some other (non-bird) observations In Great Smoky Mountains
National Park:
Thursday 3/4, in Cades Cove:
My first DUNG BEETLES of the year, my first snake of the year (An 8"
RED-BELLIED SNAKE)
Thursday, 3/4 at Tremont (GRSMNP, BLount COunty): FIrst flying
MAYFLY of the year.
Tuesday, 3/2 at Tremont: Seersucker Sedge and Dafodils blooming (the
latter blooms a lot later in the park than elsewhere, due to
elevation, weather, etc)
Now everyone go out in your yards and look at the blooming "weeds"
You should see some beautiful, if small, flowers - members of the
genus Veronica deserve observation with a bit of magnification. This
is a great time of year to do some botany on your knees, while
listening to all the new spring bird arrivals in your yard!
Charlie
