[TN-Bird] Chattanooga RBA #5

This is Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the
Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society.
This is Update Number #5 made on March 4, 2004.

The WHITE-WINGED SCOTER that Judy Newsome first found on the evening of
January 30 above (north side parking lot)
Chickamauga Dam in Hamilton co. has been seen off and on ever since, with
the last sighting on February 29 above the dam. (Dan Jacobson)
Dan Jacobson and John Henderson observed a NORTHERN GOSHAWK on Februrary 28
flying north next to the silo (historic Barn Owl spot,silo is right next to
the road) on Snow Hill Road in Hamilton co. The silo is on the left before
the intersection with Monger Rd. (DeLorme Atlas pg 25, 5-C) The bird was
seen about 10:15 EST, but flew north out of sight. It was not relocted
despite several attempts since.
They also observed a ROSS'S GOOSE with several Canada Geese at a pond off of
nearby Meadowview Rd. Meadowview Rd is right off Hwy 58 (DeLorme Atlas, pg
25, 6-B) Go on Meadowview past a farmhouse (#11091) and proceed about 100
yds, the pond is on the right. This bird was never relocted.
The first Osprey of the season was seen at Marion Co. park on February 28.

The first PURPLE MARTIN sighting of the season was two at Old Washington in
Rhea co. on March 3. (Joyce Shelby)
The first Tree Swallow of the season was seen at Standifer Gap Marsh along
with at least 6 Virginia Rails and two Redheads on March 1. (David

Pine Siskins are still present in our area. A minimum of 75 have been
present at Roi and Debbie Shannon's residence on Flat Top Mountain in
Bledsoe co.
Be on the lookout for Northern Rough-winged and Cliff Swallows, they should
be here in the next couple of weeks!
The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on March 11 at
7:00 PM at the Accension Luthern Church, 720 South Germantown Rd.
