Nell & others,
Thanks for the updates on Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery, Cove Lake, banded
geese, etc. I obviously don't get out enough, so its exciting to hear
about all the neat birds that are starting to show up.
With respect to the Canada geese, both of these birds were banded at the
Oak Ridge Marina in Anderson County on 6/21/02. I have not seen or had
reports of X60A (adult male) since 7/9/02 (last seen at the Marina) so I
really appreciate this info! The last sighting for X88A (adult female) was
on 11/12/02 at Eagle Bend (which Nell and Harold Howell reported earlier).
BTW - I have it on good authority that the neck-collared (A7R4) Canada
goose seen last November at Cove Lake State Park (white letters on orange
background) was likely banded at Akimiski Island in the James Bay region of
Canada. If anyone has the particulars on this bird I would be interested
in hearing from you.
Finally, a factoid for all you goose lovers out there: The longevity record
for a wild Canada goose is 28 yrs and 5 mos (different sources will give
different records, but this puts it in the ballpark)! I know how
depressing this must be for some of you! Thanks to all of you that bother
to record goose collars and send them my way when out birding.
