Birding around Cove Lake, Caryville, TN and yard in Jacksboro, TN for
the week of March 4- 9- 2002
I only birded briefly this week at Cove Lake with most observations
being casually made from the bridge. The highlight for the week was
definitely the adult BALD EAGLE that has returned, or is perhaps a
different bird. He had not been seen since the 13th of Jan. after
spending 5 days then. I saw him 3-6 (4:30 pm) and 3-8 of this week
around 8:30 am.
Duck numbers are dwindling and were sporadic in number and species from
day today. I believe the Eagle has a lot to do with this. There are
still over 100 Am. Coot/ Wood Ducks are returning/50 Gadwall + /17 Hooded
Mergansers this week.
-A Woodcock was displaying there on 3-7-
This am on a brief look, I finally saw the first Spring TREE SWALLOWS
(5).
No Purple Martin have showed up yet despite earlier arrivals the last 2
years.
Around home here in Jacksboro, Campbell County near Caryville, TN
Field Sparrows have been singing the past 4 days, as well as Chipping
Sparrows heard this am. A Pine Warbler has also been singing and
enjoying suet for the past week.
Purple Finch have cont. to visit daily with 14-20. House Finch numbers
have been low this winter here. I have only had 8-10 occasionally. This
am I had a PINE SISKEN in with over 75 Goldfinches. He likes the thistle
best. The Goldfinches this winter had not even give the thistle a second
look. Strange.
Junco's are still at the feeders as well as 1 Fox Sparrow on the 6th.
Go find those new arrivals!
