[TN-Bird] WSMV NEWS: birding's Bell's Bend to get MAJOR shopping center & development?????

Birders,
Channel 4 in Nashville just reported that papers were filed today for
permits to build a major shipping center just across the river from me in
Bell's
Bend, which is where the whooping cranes, some bald eagles and many other
great
birds nest or winter. They said a bridge would be built which I think will
be at the old Cleece's Ferry location. It is going to be BIG, and that also
means that Bell's Bend MAY be the next big frontier for home building and
other "improvements." This is NOT good news for birders, especially in view
of
the thought that a nice wildlife area was recently put in over there. Of
course, the sod farms where many good birds have been found are likely to be
"developed"
Just before the 5 PM news, a helicopter was hovering above the Cumberland
River which is only a few blocks from my house. It was too cloudy to tell
whose it was, but I assume it was a TV news helicopter feeding photos back to
the station. Since I am only about 4 blocks from Cleece's, my property may
end
up as part of a bridge approach, or I may be on the edge of an interchange.
Good grief, Charlie Brown!!!!!!
Just thought all you birders might be interested. I know that many of you
have been here from all over Tennessee and nearby states to see the
"whoopers." I had quite a few calls from a bunch of birders who know I live
just
across the river.
I really hate to see that little bend of wilderness become "city," but I'm
sure Metro Council will approve anything that they think will bring in more tax
revenue. Bell's Bend is why I get owls, hawks and all kinds of non-city
birds here at my house. I dread seeing it developed.
